How We Got Here

It all started with one small Seattle shoe store and one big goal: to serve customers better than anyone else. That commitment has shaped who we are and how we work. Our history reflects more than milestones. It reflects the people who made them happen.

Our story starts in Seattle, where John W. Nordstrom opened a small shoe store with a big idea: deliver the best service possible.

As our customers base grew, so did we. We went public, expanded beyond shoes into apparel and opened our first Nordstrom Rack.

We entered the digital space with the launch of a new website. As the world changed rapidly, we adapted to meet customers wherever they were—online and beyond.

We moved into our new Seattle headquarters, opened new stores and expanded our brand portfolio.

Each year, Fortune magazine releases its World’s Most Admired Companies list, and Nordstrom has been honored to be continuously recognized.

In 2025, the company announced its acquisition by members of the Nordstrom family and El Puerto de Liverpool, marking its transition to become a private company. From one tiny shoe store, Nordstrom has grown into a leading fashion retailer. It offers an unparalleled selection of shoes, clothing, accessories, home goods and gifts, and an extensive range of services to make shopping fun, personalized and convenient.
