Engineer 2
Job Description
As part of Integrated Merchandising (IM), we are enhancing the data platform's integration with Toolio across both ingress and egress to enable seamless integration with less support and maintenance across our team and other track teams. Adding this resource allows us to stay aligned to the tight timelines for the multiple IM MP/AP rollouts. This investment helps us realize margin gains and stay on track for the deprecation of legacy Planning applications, resulting in approximately $400K in cost savings.
Role Overview
An Engineer 2 is part of a key team of Nordstrom Technology professionals who design, build, and maintain technology products, systems, and solutions that deliver amazing customer experiences while meeting the needs of the business. The scope, responsibility, and accountability of this role is at the function level.
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Engineer 2 to join our organization. In this role, you will be responsible for designing and developing highly available, robust, and scalable solutions, and for collaborating with local and partner teams to implement efficient solutions that meet business needs. You will identify performance issues and apply knowledge of secure coding practices and secure-system fundamentals (e.g., cross-site scripting, security certificates), and you will demonstrate thorough knowledge of information technology concepts, issues, trends, and best practices as they relate to the discipline. You will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to deliver solutions on time.
Our team plays a critical role in supporting planning solutions and facilitating seamless data integration with external vendors, which requires strong technical expertise and close coordination.
A day in the life…
- Design, build, and maintain the ingress and egress data integrations between the IM data platform and external vendor systems such as Toolio, ensuring seamless data flow with reduced support and maintenance overhead.
- Develop robust, maintainable, and reusable code and services for data ingestion, transformation, and delivery across merchandise and assortment planning process flows.
- Design, build, and maintain high-performant APIs and critical software services for 1st-party and 3rd-party (vendor) entities.
- Build and enhance data pipelines on the platform's Airflow, BigQuery, and Kafka stack, with attention to reliability, performance efficiency, scalability, availability, security, and alerting across test, integration, and production environments.
- Design loosely coupled, event-driven services using asynchronous message processing.
- Understand business, stakeholder, and technical requirements; assist in analyzing existing solutions and assess gaps between business expectations and current products.
- Implement efficient, simple, modular, and extensible solutions that meet business needs and adhere to requirements.
- Identify and troubleshoot performance and availability bottlenecks; analyze system performance against non-functional requirements such as reliability, operability, performance efficiency, and security.
- Apply secure coding practices and secure-system fundamentals (e.g., cross-site scripting, security certificates) and analyze defects from prior work to avoid recurrence.
- Develop, maintain, and enhance automated test cases, CI/CD, and deployment procedures; practice test-driven development that prioritizes quality.
- Collaborate with local and partner track teams to deliver solutions on time and stay aligned to the IM MP/AP rollout timelines.
- Display an operational mindset, support and ensure reliability of the systems under your purview, and have a customer-focused mentality toward the engineering teams and business users who rely on your work.
- Lead by example and enforce Nordstrom and industry engineering standards, contributing to their continuous improvement and to the community of practice.
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of information technology concepts, issues, trends, and best practices as they relate to the discipline.
- Participate in 24x7 on-call support and incident resolution for complex production issues.
You own this if you have…
- 2+ years of professional software development experience.
- Strong development experience in one or more object-oriented languages (Java, Python, Kotlin).
- Experience designing and implementing RESTful / GraphQL services (Node.js / TypeScript a plus).
- Experience building data pipelines and data-driven, message-oriented architectures, including orchestration tooling such as Airflow.
- Experience with cloud-scale data warehousing (e.g., BigQuery) and large relational and NoSQL databases, including SQL optimization.
- Experience with streaming technologies such as Kafka and asynchronous, loosely coupled, event-driven design.
- Experience designing scalable microservices on Kubernetes and working knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
- Experience integrating with 3rd-party / vendor systems and APIs; experience with planning, merchandising, or inventory systems (e.g., Toolio, MFP, RMS, SIM) is a plus.
- Experience with design patterns, code repositories, and version control practices.
- Experience with test automation, CI/CD pipelines, and software quality and operational excellence practices; automated deployment experience is a plus.
- Experience with agile development methodology.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development tooling and a strong point of view on how agents can accelerate design, coding, and testing workflows.
